Diocese • Providence • Clergy: The Catholic Diocese of Providence, R., published the names of 50 clergies, diocesan and religious priests, as well as deacons, accused of sexual abuse of minors.
The full list of names and other relevant information was published on Monday morning.
“When we publish this list, we hope it will bring healing and comfort to those who have been injured, reflecting our continued commitment to transparency and the protection of children and youth,” said Bishop Thomas J. Tobin.
Under Tobin’s leadership, the Director of Compliance undertook an independent, exhaustive and objective review of records dating back to 1950, a year that many other dioceses used as a point of reference. Many archives are decades old and the director is not the first researcher.
The director reviewed all 70-year-old diocesan records and used his training and experience as a state police detective for twenty-three years to evaluate and judge the evidence available and developed in the archives.
In some cases, the Director has conducted additional investigations to corroborate and strengthen certain allegations. In some cases of your choice, the Compliance Director has consulted with the Director of Diabetes Awareness and Prevention and/or the Diocesan Review Committee for advice. In all cases, however, the compliance officer eventually exercised his own independent and expert judgment to determine whether to include a member of the clergy on the list.
